Summary

Spa Education Trust runs 2 special schools for pupils with autism and learning difficulties. During your time as a Teaching Assistant you will be working under the guidance of the Class Teacher in the performance of all general duties associated with assisting pupils within the classroom setting.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

During your time as a Teaching Assistant you will be working under the guidance of the Class Teacher in the performance of all general duties associated with assisting pupils within the classroom setting. This will include:

  • Helping with supervision of academic work such as reading, writing and number work.
  • Reading and telling stories
  • Assisting with craftwork and activities within the classroom
  • General cleaning up and practical classroom organisation. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area under the guidance of teaching staff.
  • Contribute to the overall vision and values of the school
  • To work cooperatively as a part of a team for the benefit of the pupils in the class
  • To be fully aware and understand the duties and responsibilities outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education in relation to child protection and safeguarding children and young people
  • Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards, ensuring materials and equipment are clean, in working order and safely stored
  • To provide support for pupils’ emotional and social development by encouraging and modelling positive behaviour
  • Encourage pupils to act independently where appropriate
  • To provide communication support using modes of communication appropriate to the individual needs of the pupils

  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    • 16 months expected duration to complete, working towards your Level 3 SEN Teaching Assistant qualification. (All learning is delivered online/ remote). 
    • Training Provider: LMP Education (rated 8th best UK training provider)
    • Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade 4 or above (Level 2))
    • Maths (grade 4 or above (Level 2))
