Summary

The Children’s Society is excited to be offering a Service Design apprenticeship for the first time. The apprentice will be supported by our Service Design team and other colleagues situated in service delivery giving the apprentice a well-rounded network of expertise.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Overview 

  • Learning about a design process
  • Learning how to research what new services should be
  • Understanding how to use research findings to decide what actions to take 
  • Developing creative skills to build new ideas and visual outputs
  • Testing ideas and activities to learn what works in reality and what needs to change 
  • Working with young people throughout this process
  • Being a part of the JGA Service Design cohort and completing their apprenticeship training
  • Being involved in real life service design projects within The Children’s Society, which you will be able to put your own creative stamp on
  • Working on projects including face to face and digital services. 

Specifically: 

  • Working with our Senior Service Designer supporting with activities such as workshops, interviews, creative sessions, testing 
  • Working with the Manchester Missing team to help them to get young people’s input and improve their activities and resources
  • Helping us to improve how we work with young people in the Design team and more broadly 

Developing your skills 

  • We will help you to develop confidence with public speaking and supporting group sessions 
  • You will learn how to communicate visually and tell stories to help people understand design work 
  • You will see how our Manchester Missing service works to help young people and how it can be made even better
  • We will make sure you have time to reflect on what you’re learning and set your own goals 
  • There will be lots of chances to collaborate with different teams and partners

Course contents
  • Champion and advocate the benefits of service design and user centred solutions.
  • Interpret, analyse, and challenge a design brief.
  • Systematically analyse and apply problem-solving techniques to complex service design challenges.
  • Use service design methods to design new propositions, products, and services, and improve existing ones.
  • Co-design, workshop, and facilitation of service design activities with stakeholders and users.
  • Map the current and future states of a service journey collating information from multiple sources to form a single view of the service.
  • Select, formulate and apply qualitative and quantitative user research methods and approaches.
  • Analyse and evaluate findings from qualitative and quantitative research methods to understand and prioritise user needs.
  • Evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts, and data to make judgements, and develop questions to achieve a solution to a problem.
  • Select and use ideation methods to generate multiple solutions to complex problems.
  • Prioritise potential solutions to select which to take forward to further development.
  • Prototype concepts and solutions from low to high degrees of fidelity.
  • Evaluate prototype solutions, selecting the most appropriate methodology.
  • Select, formulate and apply a range of user testing methods to ensure any service changes create the desired impact.
  • Apply user-centred design processes to iteratively develop concepts and solutions.
  • Evaluate solutions in place to continually improve the service for users and stakeholders.
  • Critically analyse, interpret and evaluate complex information and concepts.
  • Communicate complex information, concepts and ideas adapting for different audiences.
  • Influence, negotiate and challenge stakeholders in the delivery and decision-making process.
  • Considers multiple viewpoints including those of the internal stakeholders, service users and service providers.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Work ethically and sustainably, to ensure research and design activities are carried out to the highest practice in ethical standards.
  • Manage project to timescales and budget requirements.
  • Identify and apply emerging industry developments to continuously improve service design practice.
  • Provide support, specialist advice, and guidance.
  • Identify the training requirements for their teams and stakeholders.
  • Your training plan

    The training includes;

    • 2 half day interactive seminars and a round table catch up each month
    • 3 mini projects - set every third month throughout the programme
    • 1 end-to-end project
    • Monthly round tables plus 1:1 coaching sessions
    • Quarterly formal progress reviews
    • Off The Job Hours - Putting learning into practice
        (minimum 6 hours per week)
    • Progress is recorded via OneFile - An online learning journal tool
