Summary

We have an exciting and unique opportunity available for an Apprentice to join our Finance team. This role is ideal for someone to with the desire and drive to succeed and learn in a busy, friendly and supportive department. You will assist with all aspects of the daily accounting for purchase ledger and finance administration for the department.

Annual wage
£15,470 a year

£8.50 per hour with staged increase upon completion of apprenticeship.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

You will be required to assist with all aspects of the daily accounting for purchase ledger and finance administration, including reconciliations. You will support the finance team with administrative requirements and liaise with Parishes, Parish Priests and Curial (administrative) team members to ensure the efficient and timely workings of the finance department. 

The duties will include:

  • Input supplier invoices and credit notes into the purchase ledger system, ensuring that the postings are kept up to date and complete
  • Ensure that invoices are approved in compliance with the organisational authorisation procedures and follow up missing approvals in the workflow
  • Reconcile supplier statements against purchase ledger entries and investigate any discrepancy or queries with suppliers
  • Monitor and investigate the log of invoices and expense claims that have remained unapproved for a considerable period and escalate issues to the supervisor
  • Deal with supplier / and expense payment queries (email and phone) and escalate issues to the Finance Supervisor, as required
  • Prepare the initial selection for payment runs based on the aged creditor analysis, ensuring that invoices are within agreed supplier payment terms and that all necessary documentation is complete and logged into the system following full sign-off
  • Support the quarter-end and year-end close processes
     

This list is not exhaustive but gives an example of some of the duties and can be added to as required and in accordance with Diocesan needs. 

The successful candidate will be given all relevant training to work and develop in the role.

Course contents
  • Record transactional data.
  • Use the organisation’s standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as, reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.

    About this company

    The Diocese of Plymouth is the Catholic Church in the South West of England which was founded in 1851 and comprises of the counties of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. Our Curia offices are set in the beautiful countryside of Ashburton in St Boniface House. Our offices comprise of several departments including Finance, HR, Property, Safeguarding and Education.     After this apprenticeship

    The Diocese will support the Apprentice in completing a recognised finance qualification such as AAT.  

    This is an apprenticeship with a minimum term of 15 months however, we are seeking an individual with a desire to complete multiple AAT qualifications and potentially remain as a permanent member of the finance department thereafter although this is not a requirement. 

    There is scope to continue to gain a further recognised qualification such as CEMA in the future if this is of interest to the candidate and is in line with the requirements of the organisation.
