Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

Ever wondered how products get from A to B ? We have an exciting new apprenticeship opportunity for the right candidate who will learn all aspects of the freight forwarding industry.

If you want to be part of an industry that doesn’t sit still and be involved in keeping the country moving then this is the apprenticeship for you. If you want to learn about import and export procedures by road , sea and air to and from far flung countries of the world as well as closer to home then come and join us.

The right candidate will learn all aspects of the freight forwarding industry, including:

  • Inco Terms
  • Tariffs
  • Commodity codes
  • Import and Export customs procedures
  • To learn how to move freight from shippers door to final consignee’s door completing all relevant documentation via road , air , sea & courier.
  • To gain confidence to speak to overseas agents , airlines , hauliers , shipping lines and our UK customers to enable them to arrange the shipments in a timely and cost effective manner. 

They will be part of a smaller branch of a larger organisation who gives back up with consolidated services and further help and resources when required.

Please note this position is based in Staffordshire not Newcastle.

Course contents
  • Select freight forwarding services based on customer requirements, taking into account country specific factors, delivery times and modes.
  • Use generic or bespoke ICT systems in order to enter and monitor data on importing or exporting goods.
  • Book, plan and monitor international shipments, using manual or ICT systems, in accordance with the rules and regulations that apply to that area of the world and to the goods consigned.
  • Prepare a customs declaration to a national standard, or give custom clearance instructions to a third party.
  • Use data systems to submit the information required by customs authorities as part of the management of the international movement of goods.
  • Produce freight costings and invoices in line with Incoterms, customer profile or sales contract.
  • Identify and source data from customers, systems or colleagues.
  • Identify and resolve problems in line with responsibilities.
  • Create and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Adapt communication based on the situation and the audience.
  • Identify problems outside of limits of responsibility and escalate within company policy.
  • Communicate in writing, preparing communications on technical matters.
  • Communicate with others verbally, including internal and external customers.

  • Your training plan

    • On the job training delivered by the employer
    • Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeships English and mathematics minimum requirement is Entry Level 3
    • Allocation of an apprenticeship delivery coach who will carry out regular training
    • Assessment and support visits to ensure you acquire new learning, knowledge skills and behaviours in order to progress and develop
    • Identify, track and support 6 hours off the job training activities
    • Quarterly formal progress review meetings, identifying learning achievements and next steps

    Requirements

    Desirable qualifications

    GCSE in:

    • 5 GCSE’s including Maths and English (grade A*-C/ 4-9)

    Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

    After this apprenticeship

    • Once qualified and if good understanding is proven throughout the apprenticeship and I feel they are competent enough – there will be a role within the export department working within the team under the export supervisor directly.
