Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Supervise and support pupils, ensuring their safety and access to learning
  • Encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate
  • Prepare the classroom for lessons, and clear away afterwards
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting any difficulties
  • Support pupils to understand lesson instructions
  • Support pupils in respect of school curriculum, e.g. Literacy, Numeracy, and Early Years, as directed by the teacher
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtimes
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and other out-of-school activities
  • Other duties as and when required

  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    • Monthly 1-1 session with assessor coach in the workplace
    • Functional skills if required

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade C or 4)
    • Maths (grade C or 4)

    After this apprenticeship

    • At the end of your apprenticeship you will of achieve the nationally recognised Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, as well as valuable work experience, that will provide you with the best chance possible of being offered a full-time Teaching Assistant position
    • A newly qualified Teaching Assistant can earn between £14,000 and £21,000 per annum
