Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Vacancy Description:

  • Supervising classroom activities
  • Assisting with young people’s learning experience
  • Helping students who might need extra support
  • Learning classroom-based skills and behaviour techniques
  • Learning how to plan sessions and think about learning objectives
  • Working alongside the teacher to support all classroom activities

Support for the teacher:

  • Assist with the planning of learning activities.
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals.
  • Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards.
  • Assist with the display of pupil’s work.
  • Monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement / progress as directed.
  • Establish constructive relationships with parents / carers.
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupil’s achievement, progress, problems etc.
  • Maintain records as requested.
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
  • Provide general clerical / administrative support e.g. administer coursework, produce worksheets for agreed activities, photocopying, typing, filing etc.

Support for the curriculum

  • Support pupils in understanding instructions
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities / teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses.
  • Support pupils in using ICT and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use.
  • Prepare, maintain, and use equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activities, and assist pupils in their use.
  • Monitor and manage stock and supplies, cataloguing as required.

  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • Maths and English (grade 4/C or higher)
