Summary

Market Drayton Golf Club are looking to recruit an Apprentice Golf greenkeeper to assist in the day-to-day set up and maintenance of the course, all the related practice facilities and planted areas. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a keen interest in golf and greenkeeping.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

The successful candidate will assist the Head green Keeper and team in delivering a high-level golf course to the best possible standard, in a beautiful setting of the Shropshire countryside. The work is varied and occasionally labour intensive but immensely satisfying

The apprentice will be supervised and trained to:

  • Rake bunkers
  • Change putting holes
  • Use of hand tools, strimmer’s, mowers, tractor driving.
  • Machinery service and operation.

  • Identify and maintain natural habitats and areas of biodiversity.
  • Apply irrigation to achieve appropriate soil conditions and golf course playability.
  • Handle, store and dispose of golf course waste materials in accordance with environmental or waste management policies.
  • Monitor and maintain standards of health, safety and security for oneself, colleagues, golfers and visitors on the golf course and surrounding areas, in line with legislation and company policy and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with greenkeeping staff, colleagues and others within the golf club environment.
  • Keep up to date with advances in working practices and technologies to maintain and develop personal performance.
  • Communicate golf course related information to stakeholders, including greenkeeping staff, colleagues and golfers.
  • Mark and maintain golf areas in line with the Rules of Golf (including drop zones, hazard/ penalty areas, out of bounds and tee markers).
  • Measure, record and communicate green speeds applying the United States Golf Association (USGA) Stimpmeter instructions.
  • Position and change golf holes to the required finish and in accordance with the Rules of Golf.
  • Set up mowers and mow areas of the golf course in accordance with golf course standards.
  • Maintain and present bunkers for play.
  • Switch and brush golf course turf.
  • Set up equipment and aerate and scarify areas of the golf course.
  • Repair damaged golf turf in play (for example, by turfing, plugging or patching).
  • Use a range of integrated methods to control weeds, moss, fungal diseases, pests and turf disorder
  • Apply top dressing in accordance with golf course requirements.
  • Apply fertiliser to playing surfaces.
  • Prepare, set up, operate and store tools, equipment and machinery in line with manufacturers' instructions and to the required specifications, to ensure their safe and effective use on golf turf surfaces and surrounding areas.
  • Carry out routine maintenance to tools, equipment and machinery used for greenkeeping practices, in line with manufacturers' instructions and company policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and operate a tractor with attachments in line with manufacturers instructions, legislation and company policies and procedures (including risk assessment, hitching, and safe stop).
  • Maintain and renovate non-turf areas such as pathways, penalty areas.
  • Monitor and record soil and plant health data.
  • Prepare ground and establish turf and seed.
  • Identification of grass type through seed inspection and physical inspection of the plant using either common or botanical names.

  • Your training plan

    Training will be provided in the workplace through Myerscough College where you will work towards the Golf Greenkeeper Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.

    The apprenticeship is made up of a number of different nationally recognised qualifications which are as follows:

    City & Guilds Certificate in Golf Greenkeeping

    The qualification is made up of a number of mandatory units designed to have maximum relevance to the job & integrate with day to day responsibilities.

    End assessment, conducted by an independent assessor, which include:

    • Knowledge test (30% of grading)
    • Personal statement & portfolio of evidence (20% of grading)
    • Course walk & practical end assessment 5 – 6 hours (50% of grading)

    There will be 3 levels of achievement: Pass, Merit & Distinction.

    This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with BIGGA. Upon completion of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.

    GCSE in:

    • 2 other subjects (grade 2-9/E-A*)

    • Maths (grade 2-9/E-A*)

    Other requirements

    The role covers all aspects of golf course maintenance, from mowing outfield areas to fine turf management which includes nutritional input, pest and disease management, irrigation, sward management and surface performance. Application of a wide variety of turf products using up to date machinery and attachments. Tractor driving on course, excavators, hand operated tools. Construction of bunkers, tees and a range of drainage operations. The course is parkland in nature with a mix of woodland and tree species requiring on-going management. All necessary training will be provided either on course or through training providers. You will be expected to work outdoors in all weather conditions as required. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to obtain a career in greenkeeping. Give details of all qualifications gained and grades achieved, maths and English are key, include any previous work experience. On completion mid- week and weekend working on a rota are required.

    A parkland golf course set in the Shropshire countryside on the outskirts of Market Drayton town. A member’s club with societies and visitors welcome. A small team of 5 Greens staff are required to deliver on members expectations.
