Summary

As a maintenance technician apprentice, you will learn and apply a wide variety of skills including electrical and mechanical maintenance of industrial equipment in a chemical manufacturing setting with many opportunities to develop and improve your skills.

You will start your apprenticeship on a salary between £17K- 19K, dependent on age, and you will receive annual pay increases to reflect your increase and knowledge and experience.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Learn to provide maintenance support for Macdermid Birmingham’s chemical manufacturing operations and sites facilities
  • This will include, assisting the maintenance technician with their day-to-day upkeep of the plant and facilities and adding to the proactive approach of the maintenance
  • Learn from and assist the site’s maintenance technician in executing the site’s inspection and preventative maintenance programme
  • Learn to and assist in providing first line response to equipment failures and maintenance work requests on electrical, pneumatic and mechanical systems
  • Learn to and assisting with routing maintenance tasks including dismantling pumps, repairing pipework, finding and rectifying electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic faults
  • Ensure full and accurate records of work are retained and easily retrievable
  • Contribute to ongoing plant and building improvements and ensure plant and building maintenance is complete to a high standard
  • Ensure all work is done to a high standard and is conducted safely, complying with legislation and following the company’s procedures
  • Assisting with project work including installation of new plant and equipment

Your training plan

  • Your training will take place over 4 years
  • In year 1 you will spend around 7 months at our training partner, Make UK's facility in four-week blocks, learning hands on practical skills, before returning to the company for 2 weeks
  • In years 2 & 3 you will attend Make UK on day release to study for and complete your classroom learning BTEC Level 3 Engineering
  • In years 3 & 4 you will study towards your development competence (NVQ) working with Make UK's assessors who will work with you to ensure you get on the job training
  • To complete your apprenticeship, you will undergo your End Point Assessment (EPA)

Together with invaluable commercial and practical experience, you’ll gain several academic and vocational qualifications throughout your time with us, which are fully paid for, including: 

  •  Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)– off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham in year 1
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)– Technical Support
  •  Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
  •  In house training in line with your requirements

Other requirements

You will be working in a maintenance department that has established a highly proactive approach to maintenance work. You will be working on or around a vast variety of different chemicals and applications and will need to put health and safety to the fore front of your daily tasks. As an upper tier COMAH site, HSQE is critical to our operations, and you will need to always follow all safety procedures, and complete reporting on our CMMS system accurately. You will also complete training at Macdermid including the following - IPAF licence - FLT Licences - Chemical Awareness - Steam Boiler Operator Training - Pump Technical Training - 18th Edition Electrical Wiring Regulations - As well as an intensive in house competency and training programme
