Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Outline of day-to-day duties:

Maintain professional study of apprenticeship course and modular assignments, including attendance at college
Assist with enquiries from the public professionally, efficiently and in a courteous manner
Liaising with other Council Services and external organisations as required, to gather or share information and maintain and update records
To carry out under close supervision, all appropriate arboriculture and grounds maintenance operations across the district
Under supervision, to operate all machinery, tools and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner, and in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations and with due regard to Health and Safety and Safe Systems of Work
Under instruction, to assist with basic tree inspections / surveys
To learn how to safely and appropriately use chainsaws, climb, fell and dismantle trees and undertake aerial work
To carry out maintenance operations such as re-staking, stake removal, tie adjustment and removal
To undertake crown lifting, reduction and thinning operations from the ground, using ladders and/or climbing equipment, following training
To carry our felling and grubbing out operations once trained
To ensure that vehicles, machinery and hand tools are kept clean, secure and serviceable at all times
Once trained, to ensure safety of all operations, including works on or adjacent to the public highway by using appropriate signing, guarding and traffic management measures
To maintain accurate and legible records including timesheets, tick sheets, vehicle and machinery defect report forms, pesticide application forms, incident forms etc.
To maintain a full driving licence as you will be required to travel and report any changes immediately to your supervisor
To assist with the planting and maintenance of annual bedding displays, hard and soft landscaping and associated grounds maintenance duties as required
Any other ad-hoc duties as may reasonably be required

Course contents

Recognise health and safety needs onsite and work safely

Complete site-specific risk assessments and emergency action plans

Select appropriate equipment for tree work operations

Set out workplace signage (highway & non highway) and assists with traffic control

Process tree work arisings using appropriate machinery

Maintain and take appropriate care of tools, equipment and other onsite factors (such as customer or public buildings etc.)

Recognise a variety of tree species using common names

Carry out a range of formative pruning operations

Carry out branch removal up to 200mm diameter with hand tools (target pruning for final cut).

Fell and process small trees up to 380mm diameter.

Support aerial tree workers with transfer of equipment for aerial tree work operations

Perform an aerial rescue of colleague from a rope and harness

Work safely at height in the tree under supervision

Communicate technical information about arboricultural operations to fellow team members, clients and other stakeholders as required.

GCSE or equivalent in:
