Summary

The apprentice would be learning a full range of skills and duties required in an accountancy practice. This will consist of practical “on-the-job” training and one day-release training at Havant and South Downs College. We are looking for applicants who are keen to learn and happy to work in a team, ideally with some work experience in accounts.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

We would be looking to start employment for a short probationary period prior to commencement of the formal apprenticeship enrolment.  This would provide the candidate with a “taster” of the type of work and environment.

Throughout the apprenticeship, we would provide practical training, running in parallel with the AAT syllabus, and covering all aspects of operating an accountancy service to clients including;

  • Marketing
  • Administration
  • Database maintenance 
  • PAYE payroll
  • Commercial software training
  • Company formation and administration
  • Providing book-keeping support to clients
  • Preparation of self-assessment returns

The ability to communicate well by telephone and email will be an essential part of the skill-set we will be looking to develop in an apprentice.

Course contents
  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as, preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Your training plan

    The apprentice will be learning on the job 4 days per week with one day per week at the Havant Campus of Havant and South Downs College studying the Level 3 AAT Assistant Accountant apprenticeship.

    After successful completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice would gain a Level 3 Assistant Accountant qualification.

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade 4/C)
    • Maths (grade 4/C)
