Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
As an Apprentice Materials Testing Technician, you’ll be assisting with and carrying out the testing of geotechnical construction materials, under the guidance and supervision of the Lab Supervisor and Senior Leadership team. You'll be keeping an eye out for deviations and errors in testing procedures, raising issues and supporting further investigations.
Responsibilities will include:
- Operating machines and tolls necessary to obtain samples and carry out examinations in line with UKAS accreditation status.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and prepare data reports using the laboratory's KeyLAB System.
- Ensure that work follows the laboratory's Quality System, both on site and in the lab.

This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at CE Geotech who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.
Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
