Summary

Kennet School are looking for apprentice teaching assistants to join their busy and vibrant learning community within the physically disabled or hearing-impaired resource team. Through training and mentoring you will learn to promote the personal development and learning of pupils to make the best use of all available educational opportunities.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Under the direction of the head of the physically disabled resource, work with individuals and small groups of children, including those on the special educational needs register, within a classroom situation to ensure each pupil has the maximum access to all learning activities
  • Under the direction of teaching staff contribute strategies to support teaching and learning for securing best outcomes and promoting pupil independence
  • Ensure pupils receive regular and constructive feedback with regards to their progress
  • Liaise with other departments and staff as necessary to promote learning
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils outside the classroom, including accompanying teaching staff on educational trips and visits
  • Attend staff meetings and INSET
  • Uphold and actively support the school's policies and procedures demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding of pupils

Course contents
  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    • The Teaching Assistant Level 3 (A level) Standard is delivered through live, tutor led remote training half a day a month alongside 1-1 training, reviews and guided study
    • English and maths Functional Skills Level 2 if required

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade 4 /C)
    • maths (grade 4 or C)
