Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Duties include:

  • An accounts preparation for small businesses and limited companies who use a range of software.
  • Business tax and personal tax.
  • We would be building their confidence to have some client contact on the phone and in person too.
  • Bookkeeping and preparing and submitting VAT returns.

We are a small friendly team and we all work together to help meet all the deadlines in the office. It would be a varied role with lots of experience to be gained alongside their studies.

Course contents

  • Communicate in a clear, articulate and appropriate manner.  Adapt communications to suit different  situations, individuals or teams.
  • Identify ethical dilemmas, understand the implications and behave appropriately. Understand their legal responsibilities, both within the letter and the spirit of the law, as well as be aware of the procedures for reporting concerns over potentially unethical activities.
  • Take ownership of allocated projects and effectively manage their own time and the time of others.  Demonstrate good project management skills to deliver high quality work within the appropriate timeline. Act as a role model and motivate others to deliver results.
  • Evaluate information quickly and draw accurate conclusions. Assess a problem from multiple angles  to ensure all relevant issues are considered. Gather the appropriate facts and evidence in order to make decisions effectively.
  • Your training plan

    ACCA Level 7 There are three levels including Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional. Applied Knowledge helps you understand the role of accounting in the business environment, and develop the practical skills and techniques expected of an accountant working in business.

    The area you will cover includes:

    • Financial Accounting

    Applied Skills encourages you to develop a broad understanding of the role of accounting in business, and how to interpret financial information. The area you will cover includes:

    • Corporate and business law (ENG) (LW)
    • Performance Management (PM)
    • Taxation (TX-UK)
    • Financial Reporting (FR)
    • Audit and Assurance (AA)
    • Financial Management (FM)

    By studying Strategic Professional, you’ll learn advanced techniques, skills, and the professional ethics required of an accountant or consultant operating at a senior level. Once you’ve successfully passed you can apply to be a full member of ACCA.

    Other requirements

    The salary range is between £17,000 - £25,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include: Holidays are 28 days including bank holidays plus the extra days between the bank holidays at Christmas/New Year when the company shuts down. We offer Auto-enrolment pensions and also we have Sage Benefits which gives discounts at various stores, etc. We have one early finish Friday at the end of each month when we close at 3pm instead of 5pm. Working hours - Monday to Friday 9-5

    About this company

    We are a general accounting practice with two partners base in the town centre in Driffield. We work with a wide range of local businesses across all sectors. We were established in 2006 and have a steady growth year on year and comprised of a small and friendly team. We are a small team of 10 people. We have a good rapport within the office. All staff are long standing and we have lovely clients who are also long term relationships.

    After this apprenticeship

    As studies progress we would be helping them build ongoing relationships with the clients and moving on to supervise new trainees in the future. If they are very ambitious there are opportunities to build their own client bank if we both agree that this is suitable for them when the time is right.

    Completion of the Accountancy or taxation professional apprenticeship will result in eligibility to apply for membership in one or more of the UK professional Bodies below, subject to meeting the requirements expected by the regulator and/or the relevant regulations where chartered status is involved:

    • The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
    • The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
    • The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) 
    • The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT)
