Summary

We are looking for a Painting & Decorating apprentice who lives in Nottingham to support our company. We are Specialist Painting Contractors for New Housing developments working on various sites in the East Midlands

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Please note that although the employer is based in Mansfield NG18, they are looking for a candidate that lives in the Nottingham area as they have teams of qualified decorators that live in Nottingham and will be able to give lifts in their work vans to the various places of work in the East Midlands.

The main requirement is that you live within Nottingham (can be Nottinghamshire if you have your own transport) so you can meet up with the teams that live in Nottingham.  You will also need to be able to easily travel to Nottingham College Basford campus NG8 6AQ for the one day per week at college for 2 years. 

This apprenticeship would be ideally suited to an individual who wants to follow a career as a qualified Painter & Decorator by gaining valuable hands-on experience working for a respected company who Specialist Painting Contractors for New Housing developments.

Tasks that you will be trained to do during the apprenticeship include:

  • Learning all aspects of painting and decorating whilst working on new housing projects
  • Be totally committed to achieving a high level of customer satisfaction through the quality of the end result
  • Increasing your Skills and knowledge of different materials, tools and techniques throughout duration of the apprenticeship and ensuring their use in a safe and professional manner as part of a safe working environment to ensure you are not a risk to yourself, colleagues or members of the public
  • Assisting colleagues to ensure timely and quality project outcomes
  • Ensuring at all times that the project is carried out and maintained with the utmost care, tidiness and housekeeping and ultimate respect for the client’s property and projects vision
  • Tools equipment and resources are vital to successful outcomes and as such should be respected, maintained, cleaned and stored as requested.

  • Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE), Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and dust suppression.
  • Check and safely use working at height equipment for example steps, hop-ups, and podiums.
  • Identify hazards and comply with risk assessments, method statements, control measures and safe systems of work and report to manager when required.
  • Read and interpret information for example from drawings, specifications, work instructions, manufacturer’s safety data sheets and manufacturer’s information such as colour charts and notations.
  • Ensure materials are used efficiently and sustainably including suitable disposal of waste.
  • Prepare work area: remove and store furnishings, fixtures and equipment and reinstate.
  • Protect and prepare a safe working area, surrounding surfaces and environment.
  • Select and use hand tools and equipment.
  • Maintain and store hand tools.
  • Select, use, maintain and store power tools.
  • Prepare internal and external untreated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example: trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
  • Prepare internal previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, plasterboard, timber and timber sheet materials.
  • Prepare external previously coated surfaces ready to receive finishing systems for example trowelled finishes plaster or render, timber and timber sheet materials; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous).
  • Prepare and apply surface coatings to untreated external surfaces for example brick, stone, render, wood, metal using a brush and roller.
  • Apply solvent borne and water borne coating systems using brush and roller to ceilings, walls, linear work (skirting board and architrave) doors: flush and panelled and opening windows.
  • Prepare and apply foundation paper: Cross lining or vertical hanging around socket and switches, internal and external angles.
  • Prepare and apply Wallcoverings: Free match or random match finishing papers, vertical hanging, around socket and switches, internal and external angle.
  • Carry out minor repair for example third party damage or post application defect.
  • Apply team working principles.
  • Verbally communicate with others, applying construction terminology.
  • Communicate in writing with others for example, internal and external customers, colleagues.
  • Follow equity, diversity and inclusion guidance.
  • Your training plan

    One day per week day release for 2 years at Basford campus.

    The next group is planned to start 5th November, however the employer is looking to employ a suitable candidate ahead of the day release starting.

    The apprenticeship is passed by an End Point Assessment with an external organisation. This is scheduled in 3 months after the 2 years day release at college has been completed.

    GCSE in:

    • English & maths (grade 3 or D or Level 1 pass)
