Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

To assist Nursery Nurses and senior nursery nurses in the nursery using the EYFS to plan and ensure variety and diversity to maintain the children's interest and to ensure development of the children. - To undertake training via NVQ Provider and in-house and to ensure you quickly become fully conversant with the Nursery Safeguarding Policy and Prevent Duty. - To assist in providing high quality childcare and education for all children - To assist in providing a safe environment by being aware at all times of the dangers and appropriate preventative measures - To implement systems of observation record keeping and assessment. - To liase closely with parents/carers informing them about the nursery curriculum, exchange information about the child's progress and encourage parents' involvement - To liase with other members of staff to ensure a smooth transition of children from one room to the next To continue to, and implement all the nursery policies and procedures - To attend in-service training where appropriate and to attend staff meetings when required - To assist in maintaining the cleanliness and serviceability of equipment, toys and books etc in the nursery -Assist in the supervision of meal times, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness at all times - To communicate regularly with the Nursery Manager/ Deputy Manager - Whilst working towards your qualification to keep and ensure all targets are met, up to date with all targets set by you assessor or the Education manager - To ensure that a good example is set at all times in the way that the children are spoken to and the words that are used and that the pronunciation is correct (i.e. no slang to be used at any time) - To maintain confidentiality at all times - Undertake any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the duties and responsibilities of the post as defined, subject to the provision that normally any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the job description in specific terms.

  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
  • Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
  • Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
  • Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
