Summary

The Apprentice Early Years Educator will be responsible to the Nursery Management Team. You will provide a safe, caring and stimulating environment in which children are nurtured and can play and develop. You will also ensure the effective implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To maintain and take guidance from appropriate policies, procedures and systems ensuring the educational, social, physical, emotional, health and welfare needs of the children are always met.
  • To develop a good knowledge of the Education Programme based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and take support from the Early Years Team Supervisor in using children's interests and developmental needs to deliver effective activities which stimulate and extend children’s learning.
  • To become involved in the role of Key Person, with support from the Early Years Team Supervisor to complete effective assessments and recording systems.
  • To demonstrate care and sensitivity toward children and families within the facility.
  • To provide an environment that is safe, stimulating, and challenging.
  • To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and everyone who comes into contact with children and their families.
  • To maintain all necessary records to meet internal, ISI and OFSTED requirements.
  • To take an active role in the promotion of excellent health and safety practices.  To respond effectively to any health and safety issues that may arise and report any necessary matters.
  • To assist in the admission and induction of new children, including conducting baseline assessments with parents, completing comprehensive settling in profiles, and liaising with other professionals as necessary.
  • To take an active involvement in the daily routine and support the children in their play, considering the age and stage of development of the children within your care, in line with the guidance within the EYFS, as specified by the Team Supervisor/Key Person.
  • To always ensure the safety of all children and implement the setting’s safeguarding procedures when required.
  • To support the service of mealtime provision for the children, taking consideration of individual dietary requirements and to maintain a pleasant and social environment during service.
  • To ensure that high standards of hygiene, cleanliness and safety are always maintained.  This includes daily cleaning rotas, record keeping activities and any other reasonable duty outlined by your senior or management.
  • To ensure that the well-being of each child is maintained, with any concerns reported to the nursery management in relation to illness or injury which requires action.
  • To begin to develop professional partnerships with parents and carers to ensure that a joint partnership of working is adopted in order to share relevant information regarding each child.
  • To ensure that all children’s needs are met to the highest of standards, taking into consideration their individual requirements such as medical needs, SEN and behaviour.

Course contents
  • Recognise when a child or a colleague is in danger or at risk of abuse and act to protect them in line with safeguarding policy and procedure.
  • Apply legislation, policy and procedure to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of children in the setting (for example, food safety, diets, starting solid food, allergies, COSHH, and accidents, injuries, and emergencies).
  • Apply the principles of risk assessment and risk management within documentation and practice.
  • Teach children to develop skills to manage risk and maintain their own and others safety.
  • Use a range of communication methods, including technology, with other professionals to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional, collaborative relationships with others involved in the education and care of the child.
  • Undertake the role and responsibilities of key person.
  • Recognise and apply theories of attachment to develop effective relationships with children.
  • Provide sensitive and respectful personal care for children from birth to 5 years.
  • Advocate for all children’s needs, including children which require SEND or EAL support.
  • Promote and facilitate children’s interpersonal communication to develop their social interactions and relationships.
  • Support children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture.
  • Support children to understand and respond to their emotions and make considered choices about their behaviours.
  • Assess the responsiveness of the environment for effective child-centred experiences in line with curriculum requirements.
  • Create inclusive, child-centred, dynamic, innovative, and evolving physical environments both indoors and outdoors.
  • Create inclusive and supportive emotional environment that enables the child to feel safe, secure, respected and experience a sense of wellbeing; maintaining and prioritising the individual child’s voice.
  • Apply strategies that support children’s ability to manage change, transition, and significant events.
  • Analyse observation evidence to assess and plan holistic individual learning based on a comprehensive understanding of the child’s needs and interests.
  • Facilitate and support child-centred opportunities and experiences based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Provide adult led opportunities and experience based on the setting's curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Use reflection to develop themselves both professionally and personally.
  • Your training plan

    • You will work towards a Level 3 Early years educator apprenticeship qualification.
    • Functional Skills in maths and English, if required.
    • Paediatric first aid qualification.
    • You will be mainly work based, ie the assessor will visit you in the workplace, however you will visit college 1 x day per month.
    • You will have 6 hours off the job training to complete each week.
