Summary

Join the team at Network Archaeology to assist project and departmental teams with office and field-based archaeological projects, such as field surveys, trench evaluations, excavations and post-excavation work. The apprenticeship will allow you to gain hands-on experience, work towards a Masters qualification and earn a salary whilst you learn.

Monday to Friday, 8 hour days, with a possibility of some overtime. This may include weekends. Apprentices should be prepared to stay away from home on projects as necessary.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • Carry out a range of field-based archaeological duties such as feature excavation, plan and section drawing, the completion of context and other paper records, the surveying and levelling of areas of archaeological investigation and archaeological features, recovery and labelling of artefacts, sampling of archaeological deposits etc.

  •  

    Assist in post-excavation tasks, such as processing artefacts recovered from field-based projects, tidying site drawings, checking paper and photographic records, cleaning/organising tools and equipment.

  •  

    Attend meetings with Project Supervisors/ Project Officers/ Line Manager to gain an overview of the project requirements and agree scope and targets e.g. areas of work timescales and deadlines.

  •  

    Appropriately store, handle and curate primary records and artefacts in accordance with identified procedures and archaeological best practice.

  •  

    Create, store and maintain data (both electronic and manual) in accordance with company procedure and in appropriate formats for the client.

  •  

    To comply, be aware, undertake and promote health and safety and quality assurance requirements.

  •  

    Perform administration and general duties as and when required during the course of your duties and responsibilities

  • Research, access and apply relevant primary and secondary data relating to Archaeology
  • Contextualise and synthesise data and results within relevant frameworks.
  • Maintain and develop reference materials and databases, categorising and classifying data, including electronic data, appropriately.
  • Select, secure, check and calibrate suitable equipment and reference resources
  • Evaluate the relevance of research methodologies, techniques and background information to the investigation in question
  • Work effectively both independently and within a team
  • Work accurately and efficiently to conduct work to high standards within defined project objectives
  • Communicate clearly and effectively through written documentation
  • Ability to employ supervisory techniques effectively

    At least 20% of the normal working week will be spent training with Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) in Lincoln LN1 3DY. 

    The apprenticeship is delivered via online, asynchronous learning, one day per week, with eight face-to-face, block-release weeks of teaching sessions over a 24 month period. Face to face delivery is typically 6 weeks in Semester 3 (Year 1) 1 week in Semester 1 (Year 2) and 1 week semester 3 (Year 2). End-point assessment can then take a further 8 months. 

    Additional training will take place in the workplace.

    Other requirements

    Being an archaeologist is a physically demanding role and will involve working outdoors, in all British weather types. In addition, apprentices may be required to stay away from home on projects as necessary.
