Summary

A Teaching Assistant will work under the direction and supervision of a class teacher to assist with teaching and learning and associated activities in accordance with school policies and procedures.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Support for Pupils

  • Support the activities of individuals or groups of children. Participate in the education of children, including contributing to their health and well-being
  • Support children with special needs (if appropriate to the focus of the role)
  • Sensory and/or physical impairment
  • Cognition or learning difficulties
  • Behavioural, emotional and social development needs
  • Communication and interaction difficulties
  • Dealing with the personal care needs of children where appropriate in line with the guidance of the local authority
  • Support for Gifted and Talented pupils

Support for the teacher(s)

  • Provide support for learning activities by
  • Supporting the teacher in the planning and evaluation of learning activities
  • Supporting the delivery of learning activities
  • Support in organising effective learning environments and maintaining appropriate records
  • Support literacy and numeracy activities in the classroom
  • Support the maintenance of pupil safety and security
  • Contribute to the management of pupil behaviour by
  • Promoting school policies with regard to pupil behaviour
  • Supporting the implementation of strategies to manage pupil behaviour
  • Undertake routine marking in line with school policy
  • Provide clerical/admin. support, e.g., photocopying, collecting money, administer coursework

  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    Essential qualifications

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English (grade 4/C or above or equivalent)
    • Maths (grade 4/C or above or equivalent)
