Summary

Saltash Community School are looking to appoint a Teaching Assistant to support the progress and learning of all students in the department/subject area. You will help plan, prepare and deliver programmes of learning to support individuals to meet curriculum targets.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

  • To support the department in meeting the learning needs of all students, including those with special educational needs or disabilities
  • To assist the learning of students in and out of the classroom, individually or in groups
  • To deliver and report on intervention programmes or activities with individuals or groups, as directed by the head of department
  • To work in partnership with teachers and other staff to foster effective learning in all students

The Apprentice we are looking for will be required to carry out the following roles:

  • To learn and work in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures, and to raise any concerns
  • To help plan, prepare and deliver programmes of learning to support individuals to meet curriculum targets
  • To assist individuals in developing knowledge, skills and attitudes
  • To establish supportive relationships with students and to promote acceptance and inclusion for all students
  • To prepare, use, and maintain teaching resources, including wall displays and tidying up classrooms after activities
  • To assist with lunch and break time supervision of students on a rota basis in accordance with the School’s Policy for Playground Supervision
  • To assess, monitor and record students’ health, behaviour, and general well-being
  • To administer minor first aid and attend to the physical and medical needs of students requiring specialist care, for example assisting with administering medication, etc
  • To support teachers in meeting the needs of students with social, emotional, or mental health difficulties
  • To support teachers in the management of students with challenging behaviour so as to prevent harm and disruption to the student or others
  • To communicate efficiently and effectively all information
  • To participate in staff meetings
  • To supervise students on educational visits and outings alongside teachers and other support staff
  • To work within all relevant school working practices, policies and procedures
  • To maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties, especially information relating to students or staff
  • To adhere to applicable rules, regulations, legislation and procedures including the Schools Equal Opportunities Policy and Code of Conduct, national legislation (including Health and Safety, and Data Protection)
  • To carry out administrative tasks associated with all of the above duties, and to maintain high quality records of work

  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

    • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
    • Functional Skills if required
    • You will be allocated an assessor who will work with you throughout your programme, offering you support throughout
    • Mentoring and guidance will be given to you to enable you to succeed with your apprenticeship
    • You will have regular visits from your assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training and conduct observations within your workplace
    • Whilst at the Skills Group, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, with support sessions to help you with your project

    GCSE or equivalent in:

    • English and Maths (grade A*-C (9-4))

    Saltash.net community school is a mixed 11 to 18 academy school established in its present form in 1965, in Saltash, Cornwall, England. The school was previously maintained by the Cornwall Education Authority before 1 April 2011, when the school became an academy. In 2013 it formed Saltash Multi Academy Regional Trust (SMART).
