Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

As an apprentice you will learn all the skills to become a top Autocare Technician with a fantastic range of future career options ahead of you. You will use a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify & repair simple system faults.

Duties include:

  • Find and diagnose faults using hand tools or a computer
  • Advise customers on what repairs are needed
  • Estimate time and costs for jobs
  • Road test vehicles to check repairs
  • Tyre fitting
  • Repairs to exhausts, batteries, brakes, and servicing

Course contents
  • S1: Contribute to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace, including the maintenance of key equipment and carrying out general housekeeping
  • S2: Carry out stock procedures including dealing with routine stock deliveries, placing stock into storage, carrying out stock rotation duties and ordering parts for customers following company procedures
  • S3: Carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance in line with manufactures specifications or approved schedules, company procedures and complete approved documentation.
  • S4: Make recommendations to customers based on the results of inspections, ensuring that sales recommendations are accurate and fully costed, are ethical and in the best interests of the customer at all times, using language that is transparent and avoids jargon.
  • S5: Carry out replacement/repair and balancing of a range of light vehicle tyres, including ultra-low profile, directional, asymmetric and run-flat tyres fitted to a range of wheel sizes and types
  • S6: Carry out the replacement of components on a specific range of vehicle systems including Steering & Suspension, Braking systems, Battery & Charging systems, exhaust systems and Air-Conditioning systems
  • S7: Carry out 4-wheel Geometry operations including adjustments on a range of vehicles with different suspension and steering systems
  • S8: Use a range of specialist tools & equipment, mechanical & electrical measuring tools and diagnostic equipment to support fault identification and repair.
  • S9: Identify & procure correct parts to meet specific customer requirements
  • S10: Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability.
  • S11: Deal with and resolve low-level customer complaints
  • S12: Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues
  • S13: Use specific company IT systems within the workplace, including Point-of-sale systems and hand-held devices.
  • Your training plan

    • Training is delivered in the workplace and via seven weekly college training blocks per year at S&B's specialist Automotive Academy in Bristol
    • The apprentice will be assigned a workplace mentor and a S&B development coach who will offer support, advice, and guidance by monitoring progress via S&B’s purposely developed eLogbook that all parties can access any time
    • Apprentices take a Gateway Assessment at the end of every year to progress until the completion of the End Point Assessment
    • If an apprentice faces a daily commute to S&B’s Academy that is not viable whilst on a weekly training block, the apprentice can arrange with the employer to stay in hotel accommodation at the Hilton Garden Inn. All costs for accommodation including breakfast and a two-course evening meal are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you

    As a result, you will receive the following qualification:

    • Level 2 Autocare Technician Apprenticeship Standard
    • Functional Skills in maths and English if required

    About this company

    Wrington Motors Ltd was originally set up in the 1920s by S.O. Kingcott Ltd and has been providing a service to the local community ever since. The current owner Melvyn Freeman started working for Kingcotts in 1983 and, apart from a year as Service Manager of a Jaguar dealership, has been working here ever since, taking over the garage in 1992 when the owners retired. All of our mechanics started with us as apprentices and between them have many years of experience. The reception is staffed by experienced technicians who can advise you on all aspects of your vehicle needs.
