Summary

Provide a high standard of maintenance to all the School’s buildings, equipment, plant and grounds at its sites. Ensure the school buildings are safe & secure, as far as is reasonably practicable, at all times. Provide timely movement and arrangement of furniture and equipment to support the school needs. Provide support to other school areas

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Buildings and Equipment maintenance:
Plumbing, joinery, electrics, drainage, brick & block work, plastering, decoration, ironmongery, roof work, glazing, paving, flooring, tiling, displays, lighting, curtains & blinds, mechanical & functional checks, servicing & repair, furniture repairs, graffiti removal, inspections, recording & reporting, cleaning, and parts & spares identification 

Grounds maintenance

Mowing, strimming, cutting back, digging, weeding, planting, pruning, litter clearing, bin emptying, hedge & fence maintenance, entrance clearing (of mud and leaves), grating & drain clearing and maintenance, window cleaning, road and path repairs, boundary wall repairs, railing & gate maintenance, weed killing, pitch marking, gritting & snow clearing, signage maintenance, road & path markings and cleaning.

 

Safety
Ensure safety of self & others, undertake health and safety recommendations provided by the relevant Authorities, report any health and safety issue discovered, liaise with emergency services, utility services, alarm companies, local authority, etc. when required on site during the normal course of duties, ensure testing and regular maintenance of all school equipment and systems and keep appropriate safety records, act as fire marshal, undertake access equipment inspections and undertake risk assessments. Reporting and recording maintenance operations including fire alarm testing, PAT testing, Safe water temperatures

 

 

Security

To carry out patrols around school grounds and buildings, keeping off the premises any person who does not have the right to be there by the safest method and to report to management about trespass, open and close the buildings, set & unset burglar alarm systems, provide access to the premises in the event of fire, flood, break-in, or other emergency situations, carry out security procedures, security mark equipment, traffic direction and acting as a security presence on event occasions and undertake security assessments.

 

Miscellaneous

This is a physically demanding role involving movement of goods, furniture and equipment around and between the sites, set-up and take down of furniture and equipment for school activities (e.g. exams, shows, parent’s evenings, after school activities, sports equipment, etc.), act as contact point for out of hours lettings, assist in an appropriate way with emergencies such as flood, damage and fire, cleaning & tidying, assisting other members of staff as required, operating the heating systems efficiently, supporting school initiatives as and when required and working within the school ethos.

  • Plan the sequence of work required to carry out routine property maintenance operations.
  • Identify and select the appropriate materials and components for property maintenance tasks, ensuring these are compliant with relevant regulatory requirements and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Comply with statutory health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Comply with risk assessments, and organise the workplace, to safeguard themselves and the property.
  • Comply with key regulatory and legislative requirements, including building regulations.
  • Uses safe working practices when carrying out property maintenance tasks including the use of PPE, signage, barriers, access equipment and ensuring work area is prepared and reinstated.
  • Select, and use work tools and equipment for property maintenance tasks, applying all safeguards, and ensuring the correct functioning of equipment.
  • Safely isolate and secure electrical or electronic supplies prior to performing property maintenance operations.
  • Apply and implement routine emergency system checks, testing and routine maintenance, identifying and reporting faults as required.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to plumbing systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components and clearing blockages.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to external drainage systems, including clearing blockages and replacing components.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to environmental and energy management systems, including fault identification, safe isolation of supply, replacing components.
  • Use carpentry and joinery skills to perform repairs to windows, doors and glazing units, and their associated fittings.
  • Perform repairs to plastered surfaces, including surface preparation, fixing and mixing materials and compounds.
  • Use painting and decorating skills to prepare surfaces for decoration, apply paint using brushes and rollers, and complete sealing activities using gun appliances.
  • Perform tiling repairs, including setting out, surface preparation and cutting around obstacles.
  • Perform flooring repairs, including setting out, surface preparation and cutting around obstacles.
  • Perform planned, responsive or temporary repairs to buildings or their immediate surroundings, attending to minor defects within either masonry, roofing, fencing or railing, groundwork or landscaping.
  • Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address property maintenance problems.
  • Record and report information, using digital and written techniques.
  • Inspect own work, ensuring it is delivered to the given specifications.
  • Comply with environmental regulations and procedures. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
  • Use and adapt communication methods for different situations and when, working with colleagues and stakeholders, using industry terminology as appropriate.
  • Provide customer feedback whilst maintaining customer service.
  • Escalates issues beyond their level of competence and authority.

    About this company

    Brighouse High School is secondary school in Brighouse, West Yorkshire with Academy status. There are currently 1377 pupils, including 340 in the sixth form. The school is split site, the main school site is on Finkil Street and the sixth form building is in the centre of Brighouse. The school is innovative and has taken a lead nationally in themes such as leadership, personalisation and enterprise. We are the founding school of the Valley Learning Partnership which is a growing organisation which brings strength to schools through partnerships and collaboration. The partnership currently includes two secondary schools and three primary schools who share common ethos and values.
